Art Deco theatre overlooking the Surrey Hills. Big on comedy & live music, 3 cinema screens & cafe. Serving the community for more than 85 years. Designed by architect Percy W. Meredith, our striking Art Deco venue was built in 1931 to house the Leith Hill Musical Festival and host renowned composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ staging of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. The venue was designed to host a range of community events. It comprised three Halls: the Masonic, the Martineau and the impressive Grand; all of which remain today. The Grand can seat 900 people, and its original stage could accommodate 300 singers and a full orchestra. The acoustics were exceptional and there was also a fully-sprung dance floor.

 Plays in the Park - Quentin Blake's Mrs Armitage On Wheels by Scoot Theatre

One day, Mrs Armitage sets off for a quiet cycle with her faithful dog Breakspear.

But she can't help thinking of ways to improve her bicycle!

Before long she's added three very loud horns, a complete toolset and a bucket of water to wash her hands.

By the time she's also added a seat for Breakspear, two umbrellas, a cassette player and a mouth-organ, Mrs Armitage is riding a very eye-catching contraption.

But it's when she finally adds a mast and sail that Mrs Armitage runs into trouble...
