The Puppet Theatre Barge has been putting on a programme of unique and magical puppet shows on a converted Thames barge for over thirty years. The audience begin their journey as soon as they step onto the gangplank and climb aboard. They descend below the water line (wellingtons not necessary) and leave the real world behind. Puppets from other parts of the world hang from the walls in retirement. The theatre’s golden curtain is softly lit and banks of seats slope gently to the roof. A ship’s bell is rung, the audience falls silent in anticipation. Music plays, the lights dim, the theatre goes dark and finally the curtain rises to the delight of children and adults alike. The Puppet Theatre Barge moves between two locations - Little Venice and Richmond.

About The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney

1871: Brighton. One woman spurned by unrequited love, inflamed with barely quenched lust, undertook a murderous rampage about the town.

Her weapon of choice: confectionery. Sweets laced with poison.

The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney is a comically macabre, puppet-told, true Brighton story about obsessive love, murder and chocolate.

Seven lavish glove puppets and one narrator-puppeteer enact this historical tale, based on the story of the Brighton Chocolate Cream Poisoner.

Written by Daisy Jordan and Ulysses Black.

Created and performed by Daisy Jordan.

Recorded original musical score written and performed by Kate Daisy Grant, featuring fiddle and saw playing by Nick Pynn

The show was a finalist for the New Writing South’s “Best New Play Award” following Brighton Fringe Festival 2018.

"a gloriously gothic – and surprisingly funny – puppet show.... it's impossible not to fall for its dark, whimsical charms." - Quote from Exeunt Magazine review.

"...the kind of charming small-scale show which defines the Fringe. It's funny, self-aware, skilful – and beautifully realised in its seaside milieu [✩✩✩✩]" - Fringe Guru.

Show suitable for 11+ (contains mild sexual references)
