A place for all to read, imagine, play and create. Explore the growing Story Space book collection, celebrating books that centre children of colour, featuring books by black authors, indigenous authors and authors of colour from around the world. Story Space also includes books by authors and about characters who have protected characteristics such as disability, sexual orientation and religion/ belief. Read to yourself, to someone else, with each other, out loud. Once you’ve discovered some new stories, tell your own story through our dress-up and drawing activities! Looking for inspiration for stories of your own? Take a look round the galleries and discover ideas for new characters and settings. ABOUT STORY SPACE The Story Space collection consists of books that centre children of colour by black, indigenous authors/ illustrators and authors/ illustrators of colour from all over the world. It also celebrates and centres books by authors with protected characteristics such as disability, sexual orientation and religion/ belief. The Early Years and Families team started programming Story Space in 2017 (originally curated by artist and academic Jessie McLaughlin), when only 4% of children’s books published in the UK featured a character who was from a minority ethnic background. This rose to 20% in 2021. The percentage of books published with a main character from minority ethnic backgrounds has risen year on year but remains low (9% in 2021), meaning that over a third of English primary school pupils still find it difficult to see themselves reflected in the books they read. ABOUT TATE BRITAIN Explore the very best of British art. Tate Britain is free to visit. Our new collection displays explore 500 years of British art and its many stories and voices. Tate Britain is also home to the world’s largest collection of works by JMW Turner. Entry to the gallery is free – there’s no need to book. Booking a ticket is recommended for exhibitions but some tickets may be available at the door. Members enjoy unlimited free entry to exhibitions with no need to book.

Strike a pose and see yourself and others differently in our space for families Dress-up, move and play with different ways of expressing yourself through performance, music and making in our creative learning space for children, young people and families. Inspired by the ways artists portray themselves and others, Play Studio: POSE by Harold Offeh invites you to react to artwork at Tate Britain in your own way, while discovering something new about yourself in the process. Listen to the playlist put together by Studio Offeh, inspired by Grace, Alvaro Barrington Duveens' commission and other artworks from the Tate Britain collection displays. The Play Studio programme is curated by Jean Tormey and Katherine Eves from Tate’s Early Years and Families’ team, and is facilitated by Tate’s Family Engagement Assistants. Graphics by Alessia Arcuri. Play Studio: Pose has been devised by Harold Offeh, assisted by artist Tara White. Offeh is an artist working in a range of media including performance, video, photography, learning and social arts practice. He is interested in what might be learnt from role-play and reenactments of histories. He employs humour as a means to confront the viewer with historical narratives and contemporary culture. Every weekend and Fridays during term-time. Every day during school holidays. ABOUT TATE BRITAIN Explore the very best of British art. Tate Britain is free to visit.
