5.0 (47)
Mountain Gorillas and Orangutans are endangered due to the destruction of their homes.
How can we make our own mountains for them to live on?
We'll use different layers to create a painting with a mountainous effect using different papers, and make our own primates to live on them.
Join this fun class at the Conservatoire to learn how to create traditional straw dolls!
These dolls are often made at this time of year to celebrate harvest festivals.
We will make some paper dolls as well, and create beautiful clothes and hats for them – all of them made out of real leaves!
Let’s make our own sustainable superheroes!
Together, we’ll use all sorts of recycled materials and multi-coloured paper to make a superhero picture.
Your work will jump right off the page!
We’ll also make our very own superhero masks out of leaves and berries to hide our true identity…
How will your superhero save the planet?
In this introduction to brass course, we’ll meet all the different instruments in the brass family, discover their origins and how they have been used and changed over time.
We’ll go from buzzing like a swarm of bees to making a royal fanfare fit for Kings and Queens!
You will have the chance to play a mixture of brass instruments and see how they differ in how we play them and the sounds they make.
This class offers you the chance to test out brass instruments in a friendly environment with an experienced tutor and see if you’d like to continue your musical journey on brass through the Play! programme or with individual tuition.
If you have your own instrument, feel free to bring it along but, if not, you can use one of ours for the class.
As full-size brass instruments can be harsh on children's lips and teeth, we will be using pTrumpets and pBuzzes, which are excellent and safe versions of the Brass family.
Please ask us if you have any questions about this.
It's Halloween, so it’s time to celebrate all of the spooky animals out there!
We'll make a Halloween hanging to decorate our walls, or to put on your door for Trick-or-Treaters, and we’ll use painting, printing and threading to make some suitably creepy crawlies and creatures.
Come along to the Conservatoire for a creative contemporary dance class for young ones!
Together we’ll move our bodies and have fun – exploring ideas, improvising, improving our co-ordination and expressing ourselves through movement.
Twisting and turning, young dancers will work together to perform simple sequences and develop their own creativity – we’ll use all our energy and all our ideas!
Using the activities and ideas we explore during the session, participants will work towards a short piece of movement which they can share informally with each other.
If you love to move and want to explore a different approach to dance, this is the perfect short session for you – all levels and abilities welcome!
Get to Know & Love Your Sewing Machine
Do you have a sewing machine that spends more time in the cupboard or in its box than it does
on your sewing table?
Here’s an opportunity to get to know your sewing machine and what it can do for you!
Join this course to learn how to thread your machine correctly, how to sew a straight
seam and a curved one, the functions of the stitches and make yourself a tote bag and a pair of
pyjama trousers.
Just bring yourself, your machine, a paper copy of the machine’s manual and a
basic sewing kit.
Participants will also need to bring 0.5 metres of cotton fabric, matching thread and 1.5 metres of cotton webbing to the first lesson to make the tote bag.
This course is suitable for beginners and those that haven’t sewn in a while and would like to refresh their skills.
We will use different methods and mediums to make a watery lake like the ones Monet painted over and over again at his gardens in Giverny.
Using wax resist, paint and printing, we’ll create our very own version of his famous works.
We’ll add water lilies and of course some jumping frogs… we can even make ourselves a funky fish hat!
Did you know that the branches from the trees all around you can be used to make things?
People weave all sorts of things; baskets, fences… even houses!
Together in this class we will weave some beautiful art.
Using a branch shaped like a divining rod (like people use to find water!) we will make a stick loom.
We’ll use wool, grasses, and other natural objects to weave our art on our loom. Let's have a look at the famous hungry caterpillar- they wove their way in and out of different fruits, cherry pies and even a lollipop!
What kind of natural landscape do you like best?
Perhaps a forest, a desert, or a tropical island?
We will create our very own landscape, using recycled materials to create shores, cliffs, fields
and streams.
We can use real twigs to make a bridge or a row of trees.
We’ll paint grass, water… there might even be a volcano!
Boat, train, plane, car or scooter - what’s your favourite form of travel?
Let’s explore wheels and ways of getting around... tyre marks and tracks, footprints and all the different patterns we can make.
We’ll make a collage and print our own picture of a vehicle for you to take home.
Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor.
Inspired by his work, we will take a line for a walk around the paper and look at the way he used primary colours alongside black to create his wibbly wobbly paintings.
He also used mud!
We will create a sculpture from our energetic lines to take home.
Looking at the work of Paul Klee, specifically the beautiful painting ‘Castle and Sun’, we will explore geometric shapes and how he uses colour and shape in his work.
We’ll use rollers and painting tools to make our own geometric shapes, and create our own geometric city...which shapes will you create?
Come along to this fun and colourful class to be inspired by beautiful Ancient Egyptian wall
art!
We will paint ourselves in profile, just like the pharaohs.
Let’s try and decipher some hieroglyphics and write our own names!
A workshop for students that want to improve their performance skills and gain confidence.
This workshop is for singer/songwriters/artists that want to try out some new material and would like professional critique in a supportive and safe environment.

Taught by practicing musicians, you will learn how to collaborate, jam and most importantly have fun with your music!
Let’s rock!
Perhaps we’ll sing the blues, or have a jam to ‘Yellow Submarine’…
This course is open to young pianists, singers, and drummers/percussionists.
We have limited space available for each instrument, so please get in touch ASAP to secure your spot.
Explore the sound of the flute and other instruments in this fun-filled musical adventure.
What are woodwind instruments?
What did they look like a long time ago?
How do they sound?
We will learn all this and more through musical games, storytelling and adventure.
Listen and dance to music, become immersed in a musical story and find out all about the wonderful woodwind family.
During the session we will get to try some woodwind instruments and even make our very own pan flute and reed to take home!
Have you ever been in a greenhouse or conservatory and marvelled at how many different greens there are?
There are light and dark greens, warm and cool green... even bright and dull greens!
Let’s see how many greens we can mix up and paint together.
We will also get inspired by textures on leaves and sticks and use clay to make a paperweight to take home!
Have you ever wanted to meet a real-life dinosaur?
Let’s use some clay and sticks to create our very own tiny dinosaurs to keep as pets!
We'll have a look at the shapes of dinosaurs and do some rubbings and stencils.
You can make your favourite dinosaur or make a new one up, adding your favourite features.
Will it fly or stomp around on the ground?
What do the aliens wear on Mars?
What do the astronauts wear at NASA?
Let’s make some clothes to wear in space! We’ll make an image of an explorer, and clothes to attach with magnets so you can dress them in whatever you want!
We will also make some planet magnets to stick on your fridge so you can carry on exploring at home... what story will you tell?
We are thrilled to have Barre&Baby return to the Conservatoire this summer! You are welcome to book on to one, some, or all of these sessions.
Barre&Baby™ is a space for people to bring balance back into their lives using the beauty of dance and movement.
From both a physical and mental point of view, dance can be strengthening and liberating.
Every step of Barre&Baby has been designed to improve pregnancy and postnatal wellbeing. By involving everything from fingers to toes, we’re aiming to create space, improve circulation, strengthen the body and increase flexibility.
Greater body awareness leads to better posture and alignment (crucial to avoiding aches and pains) and empowers mums to trust their body’s signals (so useful during pregnancy and birth!).
By staying so close to you, your baby develops a sense of security and protection. Our soothing and relaxing music, played live, transmits positive feelings and supports your baby’s sensory development.
The vestibular system (the part of the inner ear that helps coordinate movement with balance) is stimulated by your own movements as you dance, and your baby’s cardiac system grows stronger as a result of the workout. Barre&Baby can provide powerful benefits for the mind too.
As you concentrate on our dance steps, you’ll find yourself entering a sort of meditation in movement, while activating the release of endorphins (the ‘feel-good’ hormones), boosting energy levels and uplifting your spirit. Finally, as the saying goes: “meeting someone while dancing means meeting them in their soul”.
Many friendships are born on the dance floor, and our students tell us Barre&Baby classes are a wonderful way to make new friends. All levels are welcome, you do not have to have any dance experience to benefit from Barre&Baby. This class includes live music and will be accompanied by a musician.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in, dance or yoga socks or soft ballet shoes.
Expectant mothers are welcome after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
For postnatal mums, please make sure you have had your 6 week check before joining. Please bring a carrier/sling for the babywearing section of the session.
Some of the greatest artists, writers and public figures, including Andy Warhol, Lewis Carroll,
Walt Disney and Queen Victoria kept lifelong journals and scrapbooks.

Use drawing, writing, collage, painting and memorable found items.
Learn sketching and illustration techniques to use in your journals, which you can create by upcycling or redesigning an old or new diary or notebook.
Learn some creative writing skills to develop a memory writing journal.
Create memories for the future.
Looking at the work of Yayoi Kusama, who we usually know for her pumpkin work, we will look at the birds she has painted.
We’ll look at her beautiful work on endangered falcons – we'll paint and collage our own, with lots of dots of course!
Come along to this workshop to explore a dynamic fusion of ballet and jazz techniques and traditions, allowing dancers to explore a wide range of movement and expressions.
Young dances will be able to showcase their creativity and be encouraged to explore and enjoy dance!
So many vegetables grow underground!
We will be looking at the work of Miroco Machiko, a young Japanese artist, in this fun afternoon workshop.
We will use inks and watercolours to reproduce one of her works of vegetables growing beautifully underground.
We will also look at Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkins, as you might be looking for a pumpkin to carve soon!
Ever fancied learning how to use clay, or have a clay project in mind?
In this half day workshop you will be free to create your own ceramic ideas under the guidance of an experienced ceramic tutor.
Students will create one or two pieces that will be decorated in coloured slips. Pieces will
then be glazed and fired and ready to collect after the summer holidays.
The very first blue and white pottery was made during the early Tang dynasty in China.
We will be looking at these beautiful vases, studying the Chinese designs and painting our own in blue and white.
We will do some colour mixing to create some wonderful new colours to use in our painting.
You can take your lovely vase home to put some spring flowers in!

What can we find underground this October?
Let’s tell the story of a dinosaur fossil through our artwork!
We’ll do rubbings, look at the characteristics of different dinosaurs, explore the textures of their skin and scales, and make our own dinosaur fossil out of clay and Plaster of Paris!
We’ll finish off our wonderful new dinos by painting them bright and beautiful colours!
We all know and love Eric Carle books like The Hungry Caterpillar! He has a distinctive, immediately recognisable style which brings a lot of fun to storytelling.
Which book is your favourite?
We'll be painting tissue papers in different colours and patterns, and use them to make our own collage animals, caterpillars or butterflies.
Using coloured sand and other natural materials, we will create our very own globes!
Using paper and biodegradable string, we will create our planet base, before deciding what should go on it.
What sort of planet will you build?
Perhaps it will be mainly blue, like Earth, or maybe it will be covered in green forests?
Come along to see what you will create!

We will explore these textures together – how fluffy is a barn owl?
How slippery is a seal?
We’ll use rubbings and printing to discover more.
Wow – it really is A Bug’s Life out there right now!
Now that all the beautiful butterflies and brilliant bugs are back, let’s celebrate them!

In this fun workshop we’ll be referencing the book 'Monkey Puzzle' by local artist and author Axel Schiffer.
We will make some hanging monkeys and babies to hang from them and we'll decorate them individually.
Where will you put your monkey?
Hirameki means ‘brainwave' or 'flash of inspiration' in Japanese... and it is where doodling and imagination come together to create something amazing!
We will make inky fingerprints and blots, and then create something new from our doodles.
What can you see in the shapes?
We’ll use pens to add features.
Will yours be insects? Or planets? Or even people?
Leopards, Sumatran Tigers, and Lynx are all endangered species of big cat.
We will look at the different patterning of these big cats and how their coats help them to be camouflaged in their environment.
How many patterns can you find in the spots and stripes?
Did you know that the ocean is one of the most important parts of our planet’s ecosystem!
Come along to this fun class to celebrate the ocean and all things wavy!
We will use paint and rubbings to decorate paper, and then we'll learn how to manipulate it, using scissors to cut shapes to make feathers, leaves and waves… we’ll also draw patterns to make it look like the sea is waving from the page.
You’ll be literally making waves!
Have you ever seen Koi carp swimming in a pool?
Aren’t they amazing! We’ll try to recreate their movement in the water while practising our brushwork, inspired by Chinese traditions and using ink in beautiful colours.
We’ll look at different techniques artists use to create the effect of water, and magically bring it to life on our pages.
Where do the whales live?
Under the water!
Together we will explore the big blue landscape that sea creatures live in, discovering the worlds of blue whales and porpoises.
How many shades of blue can you make?
Trains, boats, cars, bicycles, scooters, planes... it’s time for the holidays!
Where are we going and how will we get there?
In our art class we will explore lots of different vehicles and types of transport, using paint and collage.
We'll even make our own!
What will hatch?
As spring arrives, we will imagine and discuss what creatures might
emerge from different eggs.
Could it be a dinosaur, a snake, a chick... or will it be a chocolate egg!
Together we will explore egg rolling and decorating, as well as making a beautiful nest to keep our decorated eggs safe.

Do you ever feel like being a jungle animal?
Perhaps you leap around like a monkey, or sneak about like a panther!
Let’s make a sign for your bedroom door, inspired by all things jungletastic.
Using sticks we'll tie our sign together to make a frame, and then we’ll make a picture or a collage on paper and string it between the sides.

What colours will your big cat be?
Coral reefs are beautiful, but we need to protect them – Nemo lives there and we must make sure he has a home!
Together we will make some of our own gloriously coloured coral reefs, and even make Nemo and his friends to go in it!
We’ll be using clay and collage to create our scenes.

Come aboard the circus train and meet the animals and people – there are lions, elephants, seals and acrobats here!
What will you make? Who will be in your summer circus?
Use stencils, paint, and coloured card to create a colourful scene!
What does summer mean? Ice-cream!
At least, they were a central theme in the art of Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud, who represented the image in his 1960s themed works of sugary sweets.
In this workshop we will be exploring his use of colour, shape and feeling, making our very own (unfortunately non-edible) ice-cream sculptures.
The Queen’s Beasts are a selection of mythical and heraldic creatures that were made into beautiful plaster statues for the Queen’s Coronation in 1952.
Who made them, you ask? Well, that would be James Woodford OBE, brilliant artist and art tutor at Blackheath Conservatoire!
In this half day workshop you will design and build a Beast sculpture of your own, which you can take home to guard the entrance to your room.
The original Queen’s Beasts were a lion, greyhound, yale, dragon, horse, unicorn, griffin, bull and falcon... which would you pick for your own Beast? Or which animal or creature would you add to the list?
Come and join our expert tutor for half a day of sculptural fun and celebration.
Spend a fun week with a team of enthusiastic professional musicians, developing your playing ability and confidence, having fun and making friends!

Do you love the illustrations in your books?
Then come and create a fairy tale landscape artwork to illustrate the classic story of Beauty and The Beast!
We will be retelling the tale in drawing, collage, paint and colour, looking at illustrations from traditional fairy stories and narrative painters, such as Chagall.
We will also decorate t-shirts inspired by elements such as the grandeur and ornamentation of the castle, Beauty, the Beast and the Prince, as well as imaginative castle themed boxes inspired by the Beast’s palace, incorporating enchanted windows and captivating rooms.

This is a great way to keep up your acting skills over the long summer, and get to know other young actors in the area.
The course is spread over 3 days and costs £150.

Thula Mama is running once a week for three weeks this summer at the Conservatoire.
You are welcome to book for all three classes, or to drop in when it suits you.
Each class will build on the songs learnt in the one before, however you are welcome to join at any stage.
Create your own spell book inspired by your favourite Harry Potter character!
We’ll start this course by reading ‘Diagon Alley’ together (chapter 5 from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone), and we’ll go on to make our very own spell book to take home.
We will encompass marbling and paper aging techniques, collage and found materials to make our books look as old as Dumbledore himself.
To stay inspired we’ll listen to music by John Williams from the original film.
We’ll finish with a fun trivia quiz so brush up on your Wizarding World knowledge!
Join us to make our own fairytale castle, using paper and printing techniques. Is your castle tall, round, or brightly coloured?
Maybe it is covered in sparkling stones and surrounded by a deep moat...
We will make and decorate a pointy hat to wear, or some armour, as if we lived in the castle.
We will also need a crown and a decorative mirror for the throne room.
Is there anything else your castle will need?
There are many ways to print, some traditional and some experimental.
We’ll be exploring a few of those many techniques, from foam printing to collagraphs to mono printing and more!
You’ll be encouraged to experiment with different techniques and combine them together to make your own unique design.
Learn about composition and colour combinations to create your own beautiful print work
Learn the whole process of screen printing, from drawing up your own design to using a silk screen to transfer it onto paper and fabric.
Create your own graphics to turn into a poster and tote bag that you can take home and show off to your friends and family!
Children are invited to sit for a reading of Handa’s Surprise, the classic children’s tale about friendship and sharing by Eileen Browne, set in Kenya.
We will then create our very own fruit basket, just like Handa’s, using different techniques such as printing, painting and collage.
What will you put in yours? While we work, we will listen to a medley of songs by traditional Luo artists to keep us inspired.
An hour filled with story, art and music to start the day.
Ever wanted to make a short film? Ever wanted to have an adventure in outer space or another dimension?
Now you can do both with this filmmaking workshop that explores how to write, shoot and edit a short film whilst travelling on the adventure of a lifetime.
With their own tablets or smartphones, all children will work together to write short films which they will then produce in the studio by acting out, filming and
editing into a final production they can take home for a popcorn premiere!
Please note that participants must bring their own tablet or smartphone.
