Metamorphosis: Small flies, big changes

Metamorphosis: Small flies, big changes

From egg to adulthood, flies undertake a drastic change! Not just in their shape but also their behaviour and habitat. In this talk, Erica McAlister will introduce the life cycle of a fly using examples from some of the 170,000 species that have been described to date. From the simple worm-like forms of the larvae to the all-seeing, all-flying adults, flies have evolved to be some of the most specialised and most extraordinary animals that we share our planet with. Different species have different specialisms throughout their life cycles – from eggs that can freeze to larvae that can desiccate, these really are the planetary explorers. Come along to find out more about these winged creatures and also how learning more about the life cycles of flies is helping us understand our own. About The Royal Institute Our charitable purpose at the Royal Institution is to bring the public and scientists together to share their interest and passion for science. We believe there should be equitable access to science, and that people’s desire to engage with science and scientists should be nourished. We help more people to discover science and engage more deeply. We create spaces for scientists and the public to explore science together. We inspire students to see a future with science. We empower people to explore and get involved. And we offer charitable support to those, such as young people in disadvantaged communities, who might otherwise not be able to engage with science. We’ve been doing it for well over 200 years, with an international reach, working with world-leading scientists, from Hannah Fry to Carlo Rovelli and Dame Sue Black to Sean Carroll. We are a home for science and everyone is welcome.

This talk will make you a scientist

This talk will make you a scientist, Yes, YOU! Join scientist and author Sheila Kanani as she introduces you to 25 inspiring scientists from throughout history. You may already know physicist Albert Einstein and astronaut Mae Jemison, but have you heard of volcanologist Katia Krafft or Tapputi-Belatekallim, the world’s first recorded chemist? Combining fascinating facts with hands-on experiments and demonstrations, this super interactive and inspiring event will spark curiosity and creativity. Children will leave excited to use their imaginations — and ready to head home and create their very own experiments! A copy of Sheila’s new book ‘This Book Will Make You a Scientist’ will be available for purchase and signing after the talk. About Sheila Kanani Dr Sheila Kanani MBE is a planetary scientist, EDI consultant, space educator and author, with a background in astrophysics and astronomy research from UK universities. Fantastic Fungi Festival

Fantastic Fungi Festival

Join us at the Ri for the family premiere of an exciting new performance blending neuroscience, fungi, sound and behaviour. Developed by Pestival and a gathering of renowned scientists and musicians, ‘Zombie Ant Fungus’ is a specially commissioned work exploring the world of parasitic fungi. The performance will explore the science behind the infamous “zombie ant fungus” — Ophiocordyceps, the parasitic organism that hijacks the nervous system of ants and turns living bodies into vehicles of its own survival. Part science demonstration, part immersive theatre and part experimental concert, Zombie Ant Fungus Live investigates what happens when chemistry becomes communication. This performance will be a shorter 30 minute version and afterwards, everyone will have the chance to explore more about the fantastic world of fungi at a mini-festival! There will be lots of scientists, experts and organisations running a range of hands-on activities and demos looking at how amazing mushrooms are. Timings: 14.00 – 14.30: Performance in the theatre 14.30 – 16.00: Tabletop activities and demos Zombie Ant Fungus is delivered in collaboration with Pestival. Pestival would like to thank its supporters: School Farm Studios, Opstart, Marcus Trust, Fenton Trust, the British Mycological Society, and Arts Council England. Mars Colony Architects

Mars Colony Architects

Design, build, and expand a living colony on Mars. In this hands-on STEM+ camp, students work together to engineer a shared Martian settlement while crafting their own unique modules that connect to the larger base. Each session challenges learners to solve real problems future explorers may face on Mars—from shelter and energy to food systems and transportation. Students prototype structures, design functional habitats, and add creative, personal elements to the evolving colony. By the end of the camp, the group will have constructed a collaborative Martian world that blends engineering, imagination, and systems thinking. • Engage in a hands-on project designed to make a Mars colony ready for the spaceship landing and exploring what it takes to survive on the Red Planet • Design prototypes of structures, functional habitats, and add creative, personal elements to the evolving colony • Learn 3D software to bridge the gap between organic and mechanical. Students will use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) to model specialized features for their unique Mars base. • Fabricate 3D-printed parts for their space ship and Mars colony • Pair with Robot Zoo for a full day camp experience: Bring snacks, lunch and water bottle!
