Royal Mews

Royal Mews

The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables anywhere in the world and home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages, and the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, the horses that pull the carriages. To this day, the stables are still responsible for all road travel arrangements for His Majesty The King and other members of the Royal Family. The Royal Mews has been the location of the sovereign’s road transport since 1760 when George III moved his carriage collection closer to his new home at Buckingham Palace – since then it has been updated by several monarchs in keeping with their changing transport needs. Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach, and the Australian State Coach, which was given to Queen Elizabeth II as a gift from the Australian people, and even includes central heating! The most dazzling of all is the Gold State Coach, which has been used at every coronation since that of William IV, and which played a starring role in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022. Families visiting the Royal Mews will love posing for a photo while sitting in a replica of Queen Victoria's Semi-State Landau carriage, dressing up as a footman in specially created livery, or even learning how to harness a horse! As well as a complimentary multimedia guide for every visitor, the Royal Mews offers regular guided tours where visitors can learn the history of the Mews and its association with the British monarchy.

Through positive music interaction with each other, our toddlers are also learning important lessons about boundaries and how to handle frustration! Holding hands with partners in Monkey’s circle dances often makes the grown-ups feel very happy too! TIME TO PLAY Composing music is something that comes naturally to our Jiggety-Jiggers! Their strong musical foundation gives them super musical confidence. Props, images, music, stories and poems inspire our little monkeys as they create and perform their own special music. TIME TO SLEEP Most of our classes end with a little time for quiet reflection. Ding-Dong Music, Chelsea

Ding-Dong children are now ready to learn to read music - this is a huge milestone and paves the way for a bright musical future! TIME TO SING Singing comes naturally to Monkey and his oldest friends. Everyone is invited to take the lead in singing games and to sing a solo ‘spot’ (not compulsory!). Familiar songs form the basis for vocal improvisation and encourage children to share story ideas. TIME TO MOVE Playing together and inventing dances is what our Ding-Dongers like to do best! Dance of the ‘Autumn Leaves’ is always a moving highlight of our Ding-Dong year! TIME TO PLAY Learning to read music is an integral element to each class. These clever monkeys use their new reading skills to compose and write their own music which they play with their friends. TIME TO LISTEN Each week the children focus on finding out more about an instrument from the orchestra. As they begin to recognise the different orchestral sounds, the children begin to express their preferences. This is excellent preparation for choosing which instrument to learn to play later on! Our Ding-Dong classes are suitable for Stage four for 3 + 4 year olds.

Metamorphosis: Small flies, big changes

Metamorphosis: Small flies, big changes

From egg to adulthood, flies undertake a drastic change! Not just in their shape but also their behaviour and habitat. In this talk, Erica McAlister will introduce the life cycle of a fly using examples from some of the 170,000 species that have been described to date. From the simple worm-like forms of the larvae to the all-seeing, all-flying adults, flies have evolved to be some of the most specialised and most extraordinary animals that we share our planet with. Different species have different specialisms throughout their life cycles – from eggs that can freeze to larvae that can desiccate, these really are the planetary explorers. Come along to find out more about these winged creatures and also how learning more about the life cycles of flies is helping us understand our own.
