Royal Mews

Royal Mews

The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables anywhere in the world and home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages, and the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, the horses that pull the carriages. To this day, the stables are still responsible for all road travel arrangements for His Majesty The King and other members of the Royal Family. The Royal Mews has been the location of the sovereign’s road transport since 1760 when George III moved his carriage collection closer to his new home at Buckingham Palace – since then it has been updated by several monarchs in keeping with their changing transport needs. Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach, and the Australian State Coach, which was given to Queen Elizabeth II as a gift from the Australian people, and even includes central heating! The most dazzling of all is the Gold State Coach, which has been used at every coronation since that of William IV, and which played a starring role in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022. Families visiting the Royal Mews will love posing for a photo while sitting in a replica of Queen Victoria's Semi-State Landau carriage, dressing up as a footman in specially created livery, or even learning how to harness a horse! As well as a complimentary multimedia guide for every visitor, the Royal Mews offers regular guided tours where visitors can learn the history of the Mews and its association with the British monarchy.

Ding-Dong Music, Chelsea

Ding-Dong children are now ready to learn to read music - this is a huge milestone and paves the way for a bright musical future! TIME TO SING Singing comes naturally to Monkey and his oldest friends. Everyone is invited to take the lead in singing games and to sing a solo ‘spot’ (not compulsory!). Familiar songs form the basis for vocal improvisation and encourage children to share story ideas. TIME TO MOVE Playing together and inventing dances is what our Ding-Dongers like to do best! Dance of the ‘Autumn Leaves’ is always a moving highlight of our Ding-Dong year! TIME TO PLAY Learning to read music is an integral element to each class. These clever monkeys use their new reading skills to compose and write their own music which they play with their friends. TIME TO LISTEN Each week the children focus on finding out more about an instrument from the orchestra. As they begin to recognise the different orchestral sounds, the children begin to express their preferences. This is excellent preparation for choosing which instrument to learn to play later on! Our Ding-Dong classes are suitable for Stage four for 3 + 4 year olds.

Fantastic Fungi Festival

Join us at the Ri for the family premiere of an exciting new performance blending neuroscience, fungi, sound and behaviour. Developed by Pestival and a gathering of renowned scientists and musicians, ‘Zombie Ant Fungus’ is a specially commissioned work exploring the world of parasitic fungi. The performance will explore the science behind the infamous “zombie ant fungus” — Ophiocordyceps, the parasitic organism that hijacks the nervous system of ants and turns living bodies into vehicles of its own survival. Part science demonstration, part immersive theatre and part experimental concert, Zombie Ant Fungus Live investigates what happens when chemistry becomes communication. This performance will be a shorter 30 minute version and afterwards, everyone will have the chance to explore more about the fantastic world of fungi at a mini-festival! There will be lots of scientists, experts and organisations running a range of hands-on activities and demos looking at how amazing mushrooms are. Timings: 14.00 – 14.30: Performance in the theatre 14.30 – 16.00: Tabletop activities and demos Zombie Ant Fungus is delivered in collaboration with Pestival. Pestival would like to thank its supporters: School Farm Studios, Opstart, Marcus Trust, Fenton Trust, the British Mycological Society, and Arts Council England. About The Royal Institute Our charitable purpose at the Royal Institution is to bring the public and scientists together to share their interest and passion for science. We believe there should be equitable access to science, and that people’s desire to engage with science and scientists should be nourished. We help more people to discover science and engage more deeply. We create spaces for scientists and the public to explore science together. We inspire students to see a future with science. We empower people to explore and get involved. And we offer charitable support to those, such as young people in disadvantaged communities, who might otherwise not be able to engage with science. We’ve been doing it for well over 200 years, with an international reach, working with world-leading scientists, from Hannah Fry to Carlo Rovelli and Dame Sue Black to Sean Carroll. We are a home for science and everyone is welcome.
