Rugby classes for kids in London near you
Is rugby too rough for little ones? It's a question some of the parents on the Loopla team have asked while looking into rugby classes for kids.
In reality, though, England's youngest players don't actually tackle. Under-7s and under-8s play tag rugby, where players stop a runner by pulling a strip from their belt. (1)
Tackling only comes in from under-9s, and coaches introduce it step by step. (2)
Toddler sessions tend to be even gentler. They're usually built around running, catching and simple games that help little ones grow confident with the ball.
So the real question isn't whether rugby is too rough. It's whether your child will enjoy it.
Will my child enjoy kids rugby classes?
If your child loves to run around (or perhaps chase you around), there's a good chance they'll enjoy rugby classes for kids.
For the youngest age groups, sessions will look more like rugby-themed play than a real match. Little ones run, jump, catch and throw. Some classes even hand out stickers or skill awards for kids to show off when they come back home.
As with football training for kids, we've found rugby is also a good way for them to learn to listen and take turns.
Shy children can join in at their own pace and no experience is needed. As kids go through the age groups, the basics of tag rugby are gently introduced.
You can choose between sports halls and outdoor sessions on London's commons, depending on how your child feels about mud. For older children, local clubs run weekend training for minis, juniors and beyond.

Finding the right kids rugby class near you
You can use the Loopla search tool to filter rugby classes for kids by age and location.
Many classes for little ones split children into narrow groups, from toddlers who've just started walking to early primary schoolers. Once they start school, a local club's mini section is a natural next step.
At club level, mini rugby often means Sunday morning training, with the odd festival or tournament against local teams.
You'll also want to check how long you're signing up for. Some providers offer a short introductory block, while others sell term tickets or monthly memberships with a minimum period.
In terms of costs, one of the other things to think about is kit. For outdoor sessions, layers and old trainers are a safe bet.
To find more fun activities, see our guide to things to do with kids in London.

FAQ: Rugby classes for kids in London
What age should kids start playing rugby?
Kids can start playing rugby from around 15 months, at toddler classes designed for little ones who've just found their feet. These are non-contact sessions, built around running, catching and imaginative games. Club rugby begins at under-7s, which is school Year 2. Contact is only introduced from under-9s.
Is 12 too late to start rugby?
No, 12 isn't too late to start rugby. England Rugby's age-grade game runs right up to under-18s, and complete beginners are welcome. Players who'd rather avoid tackling can try T1 Rugby, a non-contact version of the sport. From under-12s, girls also move into girls-only teams.
How much do rugby classes for kids cost?
Rugby classes for kids usually cost around £10 to £12 a session in London, based on those listed on Loopla. Many toddler classes start with a short introductory block or a term ticket. Club rugby works differently, with a yearly membership fee that varies between teams. Some clubs also let newcomers try a session for free.
How do I find the best rugby classes for kids in London?
You can find the best rugby classes for kids in London using Loopla's search tool. Filter by age and area to see sessions nearby, from toddler classes on the commons to weekend club training. The best fit is usually one that suits your child's age and energy. Each listing shows the times, ages and price, so you can compare before booking.
