Gymnastics for kids: The best training in London near you
Do you ever catch your little one cartwheeling or tumbling around at home? Gymnastics for kids will channel that energy into an activity that can build confidence, perseverance and social skills. (1)
Below you'll find warm, welcoming classes across London teaching gymnastics for kids.
Will my child enjoy gymnastics for kids?
For beginners, gymnastics is all about failing safely, trying again and mastering a new skill. Along with all the other wellbeing boosts kids get from physical activity, this is what makes gymnastics particularly great for confidence building.
Gymnastics for kids tends to involve games, too, and sometimes crafts. This is how some coaches like to introduce youngsters to the sport, often in holiday camp settings.
As students progress they can join intermediate classes. Here, they may start learning aerials, flips and trickier feats like group pyramids.

Gymnastics for kids: Finding the right class for your child
Start by looking for a class that matches your child’s age. You can use the Loopla search tool to do this.
The next thing to check is whether a gymnastics class, camp or event suits their experience level. Beginner classes tend to be clearly marked as such.
Once kids outgrow beginner classes, they will usually work up through more advanced groups.
Another thing to consider is what type of gymnastics classes your kid will most enjoy.
Acro or acro dance combines dance with floor gymnastics. Think rolls, cartwheels, handstands and balances. Kids who already enjoy dance may particularly like the music, choreography and performance side of this style.
Traditional recreational gymnastics usually mixes in apparatus such as bars, beams and vaults. This may be better for those who are excited to one day pull off a difficult move such as a somersault or back handspring.
Many places that coach gymnastics for kids will offer free trials. This helps you decide if they are the right fit before booking a whole block. Holiday camps are another way to give your child a taste of a certain gymnastics style or class.

Gymnastics for kids FAQ: How to find the best London classes near you
What is the best age to start gymnastics?
There is no single best age to start gymnastics. Babies and toddlers can begin with playful movement classes built around crawling, rolling and balancing. From around five, children are usually ready for more structured gymnastics that involve floor skills and apparatus. Starting later is absolutely fine too. Beginner classes are designed to build skills gradually, so children do not need previous experience before joining.
What are the benefits of gymnastics for kids?
Kids gymnastics classes can build strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. There may be benefits beyond physical skills, too. A 2026 study found improvements in managing emotions and getting along with others among preschool children doing gymnastics. (1) Parents also reported greater confidence and perseverance. What makes gymnastics particularly rewarding is that children repeatedly get to practise a skill, struggle with it and eventually master it.
What is recreational gymnastics?
Recreational gymnastics is gymnastics for fun and skill development rather than competition. Classes usually combine floor work with apparatus such as beams, bars and vaults. Beginners might start with rolls, handstands, cartwheels and simple balances before working towards harder moves. It can be a good fit for children who enjoy learning physical skills step by step without needing to follow a competitive pathway.
What is the minimum age for British Gymnastics?
British Gymnastics is the National Governing Body for gymnastics in the UK. They organise events and pathways to becoming an elite athlete.
English Gymnastics is governed by British Gymnastics. The minimum age for their trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling competitions is nine in the year of competition.
In 2026, the youngest category is for gymnasts aged 9–10. Recreational gymnastics classes can start much earlier.
Are there gymnastics classes for babies and infants?
There are gymnastics classes for babies and infants in London. These sessions usually look more like guided movement and play than formal gymnastics. Little ones might crawl, roll, climb and balance their way through padded equipment and simple obstacle courses. Gymnastics for infants can help develop basic movement skills while giving babies a fun space to explore. They can also make the transition into toddler or preschool gymnastics feel more familiar later on.
What is acro in gymnastics, and what do classes involve?
In gymnastics, acro can mean slightly different things depending on the class. In many kids classes, it means floor-based acro or acro dance. Moves taught here may include cartwheels, handstands, bridges, balances and tumbling mixed with dance or choreography. Children who already enjoy dance may particularly like this style. Formal acrobatic gymnastics is different. Gymnasts work in pairs or groups on balances, lifts and dynamic moves.
