Music classes for toddlers in London near you

Music classes for toddlers in London are one of the most popular types of activity we list for this age group.

We think that's because music is probably the first type of art children discover. Kids can follow a rhythm long before they can follow a story.

For example, one parent on the Loopla team has a little girl who's about to turn 1. Music is the easiest way to both make her smile and send her off for a nap.

Music classes for toddlers in London tend to come with another perk. They often take place in some beautiful or interesting locations, from museums and a palace to park cafés.

What are music classes for toddlers actually like?

You won't see any toddlers practising scales on the violin at these music classes. Instead, they focus on rhythm, listening and movement through songs written especially for little voices.

Some music classes for toddlers follow a familiar pattern of singing, moving and playing. Towards the end they wind down with calmer tunes. This can be useful if you're still working around an afternoon nap schedule.

We love that many feature live musicians, too, playing everything from guitar and ukulele to harp and violin. For lots of toddlers, it's their first chance to see a real instrument up close.

Little ones get hands-on as well, with shakers, bells, rain sticks and other percussion. Some classes throw bubbles, ribbons and puppets into the mix.

The songs tend to follow you home. Before long, your toddler may be singing them all week. You might find yourself humming along, too. Or if you're the parent of a younger tot some of the tunes (in our experience) become secret weapons against tears or tantrums.

Older siblings can find more options on our main kids music classes page. But if you're ready to find your toddler's new favourite song, browse classes near you below.

Ding-Dong Music, Highbury & Islington

Ding-Dong Music, Highbury & Islington

Ding-Dong children are now ready to learn to read music - this is a huge milestone and paves the way for a bright musical future! TIME TO SING Singing comes naturally to Monkey and his oldest friends. Everyone is invited to take the lead in singing games and to sing a solo ‘spot’ (not compulsory!). Familiar songs form the basis for vocal improvisation and encourage children to share story ideas. TIME TO MOVE Playing together and inventing dances is what our Ding-Dongers like to do best! Dance of the ‘Autumn Leaves’ is always a moving highlight of our Ding-Dong year! TIME TO PLAY Learning to read music is an integral element to each class. These clever monkeys use their new reading skills to compose and write their own music which they play with their friends. TIME TO LISTEN Each week the children focus on finding out more about an instrument from the orchestra. As they begin to recognise the different orchestral sounds, the children begin to express their preferences. This is excellent preparation for choosing which instrument to learn to play later on! Our Ding-Dong classes are suitable for Stage four for 3 + 4 year olds.

Catchy sounds and up beat tunes for making Monkey Music! TIME TO SING Music and language have many things in common and Monkey’s action songs have been especially written to support your child's early language development. Colourful props aid visual memory while repeated actions reinforce a feel for the ‘steady beat’. TIME TO MOVE Moving and dancing freely around the room with Monkey encourages your child to express the music that they hear with their whole bodies. Exercising to music forms and strengthens neural bridges that are necessary for later learning. TIME TO PLAY The Monkey Music Band offers your child the opportunity to practise fine motor skills using hand held percussion instruments. Band members need a certain amount of self awareness and self discipline which comes with regular band practice! TIME TO SLEEP Toddlers need active time for exercise and quieter times for calmer activities. Listening is a critical life skill which we nurture with relaxing and soothing music to conclude each Monkey Music class experience. Our Monkey Music Heigh-Ho classes are stage two for toddlers from 12 months.

Jiggety-Jig Music - Putney, Barnes and Fulham

Older toddlers have fun with their friends and develop a strong musical foundation for their future learning. TIME TO SING Songs for dressing up and telling simple stories! ‘ Pretending’ is an important new area of learning as exploration and self expression builds self confidence. Through positive music interaction with each other, our toddlers are also learning important lessons about boundaries and how to handle frustration! TIME TO MOVE Toddlers are keen to get to know each other – bigger more exciting props such as hoops and parachute are excellent for sharing and making friends! Holding hands with partners in Monkey’s circle dances often makes the grown-ups feel very happy too! TIME TO PLAY Composing music is something that comes naturally to our Jiggety-Jiggers! Their strong musical foundation gives them super musical confidence. Props, images, music, stories and poems inspire our little monkeys as they create and perform their own special music. TIME TO SLEEP Most of our classes end with a little time for quiet reflection. Our Jiggety-Jiggers are gently reminded to practise new songs at home using some song words which may be printed from the Monkey Music Club. They may also be invited to bring something from home, to show in class the following week, as part of class topic discussions. Our Monkey Music Jiggety-Jig classes are Stage three for 2 + 3 years old.

Finding the right toddler music class near you

You can use the Loopla search tool to filter music classes for toddlers by age and location.

Many classes split toddlers into narrow age groups or by walking (or crawling) ability. But if you've got a baby as well as a toddler, there are mixed-ages sessions, too. Some even offer extra support for carers juggling two little ones.

If this describes you, it's also worth looking into sibling discounts. Several organisers we know charge less for a second child.

Booking flexibility is another thing that varies from class to class. Some toddler music classes welcome drop-ins. Others ask you to sign up for the whole term, or at least make it cheaper to do so. Often these classes also offer a free or low-cost taster first, though.

To find more fun activities, see our guide to things to do with toddlers in London.

FAQ: Music classes for toddlers in London

When to start music classes for toddlers?

You can start music classes for toddlers as early as you like. Many welcome babies from birth. Toddler-specific sessions often begin from around 12 to 18 months, once little ones are on the move. There's no need to wait, either. Evelina London Children's Hospital says children have a natural instinct for rhythm.

What instrument should a 3 year old learn?

A 3 year old can start with simple percussion instruments like shakers, tambourines and drums. NHS speech and language therapists suggest using these to accompany songs, or even a saucepan and wooden spoon. Music classes for toddlers provide plenty of percussion, so your child can try a few before you buy anything.

Is it good for 2 year olds to listen to music?

Yes, listening to music is good for 2 year olds. Evelina London Children's Hospital says songs and rhymes support language and literacy, and can calm little ones too. Singing together helps as well, because repetition teaches toddlers new words.

How much do music classes for toddlers cost?

Music classes for toddlers in London usually cost around £10 to £13 a session, based on those Loopla lists. Prices range more widely, though, from about £8 to £21. Many offer a free or low-cost taster, and some charge less when you book in other siblings too.

How can I find the best music classes for toddlers in London?

You can find the best music classes for toddlers in London using Loopla's search tool. Filter by age and area to see sessions nearby, in venues from museums to church halls and park cafés. The best fit usually depends on your toddler's age and energy levels. Each listing shows the times, ages and price, so you can compare before booking.
